Steam in a box
The past few weeks, 6th class have been completing a science programme, called the Building Blocks of Biology with the company STEAM in a box. STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics) is a creative, educational and fun way for children to learn about these subjects. It is hands-on learning. The children have learned about viruses, bacteria, plant and animal cells. We have also experimented with beans and the conditions beans need to grow. We've used lots of science skills such as questioning, experimenting, testing, synthesising and creating. We are feeling more prepared and excited for secondary school science now!
Guest speaker - 3D printing
Laurel and Beech Class would like to say a huge thank you to our guest speaker Ken. Ken came to speak to both classes about his hobby - 3D printing. This was a wonderful opportunity for both classes to learn more about this fascinating process.
Experiments with bubbles!
We generated some testable questions about bubbles this week - what proportion of water to washing-up liquid would give us the biggest bubbles? We made our predictions and found some fascinating results!
Science Week!
We Are celebrating Science Week in 6th class this week. Monday's activity was based around an engineering task. Using limited resources, our groups designed bridges to bear the weight of a number of jenga blocks. The groups had to work collaboratively to design bridges that spanned varying lengths and carried different loads. Well done all!
Dress Up Day
Well done to all the children in 6th Class who made a tremendous effort to get dressed up or who helped contribute to an atmosphere of fun today!
We hope you are all looking forward to a well-deserved break over midterm and we look forward to jumping back into things in November.

Maths Week!
this week in Powerstown was maths week! We completed lots of different maths challenges throughout the week, in the class, in the geodome, in the yard and in the corridors! We used izak 9 cubes, scratch coding program, investigation station (geodome) and other resources throughout the week. I think it is fair to say that there are alot of future MATHEMATICIANS, coders, STATISTICIANS and lawyers in 6th class!
Learning through drama
In 6th class, we are reading the novel, "Under the Hawthorn Tree" by Marita Conlon Mc Kenna. The story is set in Ireland during the Great Famine. To improve our understanding of the story, each group chose a scene and created a freeze frame. The rest of the groups had to guess which scene in the story they were reenacting. It was great to study our novel in a different way.
